A Solution-Focused Group Approach to Helping Children in Poverty
Kim Yu-Soon

Abstract
This study evaluated the effectiveness of an 8-week solution-focused group program to improve the psycho-social adaptability of children in poverty. A convenience sample of children 8 to 11years old from low income families were recruited through 4 community after-school programs in Seoul, Korea. A total of 28 children completed pre and post tests, including measures of self-esteem, aggressiveness, and communication abilities. Results demonstrated that the program was effective in raising the children¡¯s self-esteem, enhancing their communication abilities, and reducing their aggressiveness. The present study suggests that solution-focused group programs such as the one developed in this study can significantly help with the socio-emotional problems of children from low income families.
